Does Your Dog Have Allergies?

Did you know that dogs can get allergies, just like people can? Allergies are actually not uncommon in our canine friends. In this article, a local Craig Road, NV vet discusses allergies in dogs.

Symptoms of Allergies

Itchiness is one of the most common symptoms of allergies in our canine pals. Fido’s skin may appear red or inflamed if he is suffering from allergies. You pooch may scratch a lot, rub his face against things, or lick or chew himself. Snoring, sneezing, coughing, and wheezing can all be indicative of allergic reactions as well. Ear and skin infections are also not uncommon. Burping and flatulence are two more possible symptoms. Although less common, some dogs have more severe reactions, which can include vomiting, diarrhea, shock, seizures, or even coma. Extreme allergic reactions can even be fatal. If your canine pal shows any of these symptoms, have your vet examine him right away!

Common Allergens

Man’s Best Friend can be allergic to many different types of things. Pollen, dust, and mold often cause allergic reactions in our furry pals. Fido may be allergic to specific ingredients in his doggy shampoo, or even the laundry soap you used to wash his bedding. Dogs can also be allergic to household chemicals, stinging insects, cigarette smoke, flea bites, carpet fiber, and even perfumes, to name just a few. Some of our canine pals are allergic to certain foods, including ingredients often found in pet food, such as wheat.

Treating Allergies

In order to properly treat your pup’s allergies, your vet will first need to pinpoint exactly what Fido is reacting to. Skin or blood tests may be required. In the case of food allergies, you may be directed to put Fido on a special diet until his reactions have stopped. Under your vet’s direction, you would then re-introduce ingredients back one at a time. This will help determine which foods cause reactions in your canine pal. Once the culprit has been identified, your vet will be able to recommend treatment options. This is done on a case-by-case basis, as the exact treatment needed will depend on the type and severity of your dog’s allergies.
